October 10

Mrs. Pemberton did an amazing job getting the kids going this morning while I was at a District meeting.  They played in the center room and had a lively morning meeting.  They did a shared reading of "The Pumpkin" and then the kids illustrated their books.  See if your child can read "The Pumpkin" to you as they use their strong finger to touch each word.

After recess we read Sparky and Eddie: The First Day of School.  We are really working on asking "meaty" questions during the reading.  "Meaty" questions require the kids to give examples from the text to justify their answers.  We talked about why characters acted and felt the way they did.  After the reading we identified the beginning, middle, and end of the story.  We learned the actions for three new fancy vocabulary words; glum, whimper, and gasped.

During math the we played a game where one of our friends wore a mystery number headband.  They had to identify their number by asking greater than, less than, and equal to questions.  As the students answered the questions the person wearing the mystery number kept track using a number line.  It was a lot of fun!  They also practiced counting, writing numbers, and identifying the group that was greater than.

Please remember that Scholastic book orders are due tomorrow.  You can send your order in your child's folder or submit your order online!
