January 13

This morning we began our study of Martin Luther King Jr.  The kids watched this song and then I asked them to choose a present they wanted to open.  Here are their choices:
All but two kiddos chose the bag on the right because it was pretty, bigger, had flowers, etc.  They were very surprised to find out that the pretty bag had dirty rocks in it and the plain, brown paper bag had treats in it!  We read a book about Dr. King and talked about how people were treated differently because of what they looked like on the outside.

The kids were very excited to have a recess break!  Please remember that we go outside around 9:15AM.  It is pretty chilly!  Kids should have a warm coat that zips, hats, and gloves or mittens that they can put on independently.

In math we are introducing strategies to help us add.  Today we used a 10-frame and objects while we practiced writing number sentences.  The kids are expected to add to 10 using manipulatives by the end of this quarter.
After reading groups we read I'm a Jolly Farmer.  We watched as the characters pretended to be a farmer, scuba diver, and Little Red Riding Hood.  They learned the words fantasy, versatile, and jolly.
